December 2011 — As part of the global Amcor Group, with headquarters in Australia, Amcor Tobacco Packaging, Switzerland has made the decision to invest in a 1-TBR-compact press made by the company H.C. Moog, which will be operational in their Innovation Centre in Rickenbach from the end of 2011. Amcor decided to purchase the new machine as it allows them to offer their customers the option to produce mock-ups and do short runs with excellent print quality, in a cost effective way.
Some time ago Amcor started thinking about purchasing this machine, which optimizes costs and delivers an impressive gravure quality: since late autumn 2010 the H.C. Moog technology centre in Miehlen, Germany has had a 1-TBR-compact operating to allow Amcor to test the technology. In particular, Amcor has used it to produce mock-ups and prototypes for their clients in the tobacco industry, allowing their customers to test ideas and approve new designs faster and with more accuracy.
It was important that this “all in one” machine, in addition to achieving high print quality on a wide range of product applications, was efficient, even for short runs and finishing. It also needed to have a small footprint and have quick order change capabilities. Additional features include a preset non-stop high stack feeder, and each unit comes with dryer units which can be individually used in combination (hot air, infrared, UV), for all inks and varnishes available in gravure printing.
Another highlight is the new clamping cylinder developed by Moog which uses readily available and inexpensive photopolymer plates for gravure printing and blind embossing. This makes it possible to have cost effective short runs in sheet-fed gravure printing.
With a print speed of up to 12,000 sheets per hour it can print paper and carton from 80 to 400 g/m² as well as non-flexible foils and numerous other (non-absorbent) substrates.
The 1-TBR-compact can be used by Amcor as a single unit production machine, for handling multiple runs without difficulty, or the unit can be used as a pre- or post-processing offline production machine in combination with other sheet-fed printing processes.
