February 5, 2010 — Ink manufacturer Sun Chemical Corp. will close the production lines at its Charlotte facility by year end, moving most of those manufacturing operations to Kankakee, Ill.
The consolidation will cost 75 jobs at the company’s local plant on Westinghouse Boulevard. Affected employees will be offered severance benefits.
“We have a good team in Charlotte, but current marketplace realities have forced us to consolidate our production and operate more efficiently,” says John Gowlett, vice president of global operations. “As well as improving our cost and efficiency, this move will allow us to meet the needs of our customers for an ever-increasing level of quality and consistency.”
In addition, production of tobacco inks and coatings manufactured in Charlotte will be moved to Sun Chemical’s plant in Richmond, Va. A packaging-application laboratory at the Charlotte plant will continue to operate.
Sun Chemical is based in Parsippany, N.J. It is the world’s largest producer of printing inks and pigments. The company supplies materials to the packaging, publication, coatings, plastics and cosmetics industries.
