WAUKESHA, WISCONSIN, U.S.A. (July 7, 2009) – Chema Technology, Inc. announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has awarded the company a patent on innovative cylinder electroplating technology. The technology has been commercialized in the United States and other countries under the DisCoP trade name.
U.S. Patent No. 7,556,722, titled “Electroplating Apparatus,” was awarded to Chema Technology on July 7, 2009. The patent is based on an application originally filed in the United States in 2004. Other related patent applications remain pending in the United States and Europe. The patent lists Hubert F. Metzger as the inventor.
“Chema Technology has been at the forefront of new developments in the plating industry since its founding in 1984,” said Hubert Metzger, President. “We are pleased to have been awarded an additional patent on our DisCoP cylinder electroplating process, which we believe is another example of our technical leadership, experience, and commitment to the rotogravure printing industry.”
The DisCoP cylinder electroplating process commercialized by Chema Technology is a total system replacement using nondissolvable anodes. The DisCoP system eliminates conventional titanium baskets and copper nuggets, reducing electrical resistance in the electroplating process. The resulting increase in electrical current can increase plating rates by 30 to 40 percent. Options are also available for retrofitting existing plating systems to benefit from DisCoP technology.
The DisCoP plating process works by placing copper directly into solution. Copper is dissolved in a premixing circulation tank. An analyzer measures the solution copper ion concentration. An attached feeder system adds only the amount of copper necessary to maintain a consistent solution copper ion concentration, making up for copper that has been plated out. Use of this process results in finer grain and smoother structure. Copper hardness can be adjusted by the amount of hardener going into the solution.
Founded in 1984, Chema Technology, Inc. has received the Golden Cylinder Award from the Gravure Association of America, the European Publication Gravure Award for Innovation, and the PLGA. It is a provider of chemicals, spare parts, instruments, automatic titration, publication cylinders, pile turners, technical services, and consulting for the rotogravure industry.
