Unique Combination of Laser and LED Technologies Produces Waste Reduction and Productivity Improvements
September 2009 — A unique combination of laser sensor and LED lighting has produced a digital line and contrast guiding device that offers tremendous advantages for cost savings and productivity improvements to the converter.
BST Pro Mark, wholly owned subsidiary of BST International, introduced the CLS PRO 600 about a year ago. The device is used to guide a web to a line or a contrast edge – which can be either continuous or broken. The unique technologies used produce extremely high precision guiding and works incredibly well in difficult applications such as on reflective substrates, or on webs where there is poor contrast or poor edge definition.
Use of line and contrast guiding devices are common in flexible packaging, where the web is printed with a continuous line that is then used to guide the web during the slitting process. On the slitter, accuracy is essential to minimizing waste and optimizing output.
This type of guiding device is also commonly used in label applications and in many specialty converting applications. The CLS PRO 600 is being used successfully today in a wide range of other applications as well:
- Printed lines on metallic foil
- Black lines on brown substrates
- Holographic contrasts
- Printed circuit boards
- Cigarette paper (gold line on a light brown substrate)
