May 14, 2008 — Sleever International pursues its commitment in favour of sustainable development, crossing a further hurdle this year as it rolls out the second stage of its policy designed to reduce the environmental impact of its packaging solutions.
Sleever International: a policy in favour of sustainable development
In the wake of recycling, highlighted in 2007 by the launch of the Petsleeve® solution to recycle PET packaging and recognised by recycling bodies, today the group rolls out a fully biodegradable and compostable packaging solution: the Biosleeve® made from PLA.
By concentrating on biodegradability, a means of recycling that consists in the degradation of plastic materials once their task is over, Sleever International focuses on the use of biodegradable polymers, biopolymers. Unlike the majority of plastics derived from petrol, non-renewable resources and generally eliminated by incineration, PLA (poly lactic acid) is manufactured from raw plant materials such as corn or potatoes. This natural origin gives it the advantage of being compostable.
Biosleev®e: biodegradability and compostability that satisfy norms
Biosleeve®: an innovative sleeve solution with proven biodegradable properties. In effect, this film satisfies the ISO 14855-2:2007 norm on degradability, that determines, on one hand, the ultimate aerobic biodegradability of plastic materials in controlled compost situations (analysis of carbon dioxide released), and on the other hand, the gravimetric measurement of carbon dioxide released during laboratory tests. This norm takes into account both biodegradable and compostage criteria, the latter solution being the best alternative for this type of material.
Thanks to this norm, the Biosleeve satisfies the only realistic definition of biodegradability: ìa material is said to be biodegradable if it is degraded by micro-organisms (bacteria, fungi, etc), resulting in the formation of water and CO2 and possibly a new biomass that is non-toxic for humans and the environmentî.
Biosleeve®: optimised implementation
Compatible with up to 10-color, double-sided UV gravure and flexographic printing using solvent-free low energy inks, the Biosleeve® is designed for use on the entire range of Powersleeve® machines and Powersteam® shrink applicators. The Biosleeve® is particularly well suited for use on the latest generation of Sleever Machines, Powersleeve® Evolution IV and its Powersteam® equipment, capable of speeds of up to 36 000 units/hr.
Biosleeve® launch was orchestrated with the P'Référence design agency that created four different designs to showcase all the filmís properties.
Biosleeve® is the perfect illustration of the Sleever International groupís commitment to developing global solutions in favour of the environment.
