Laura Wayland-Smith Hatch attended SUNY Binghamton/Harpur College studying anthropology. She has lived in Spain, Japan, and Mexico and served on the board of directors of the American School in Japan and Colegio Maria Montessori. During her three-year residency in Japan, she worked as a freelance photographer and served as the Children's Theatre of Tokyo's Publicity Coordinator for all their English-language publications

For five years, she was a partner in Horizons International, an international relocation consulting firm, assisting expatriate families with their moves overseas. Clients included Xerox Corporation, Eastman Kodak, Bausch & Lomb, Schlegel Corporation, and Oneida Limited.

Since 1989, she has owned Salmon Creek Publishing, a small firm that provides customized design and marketing services for small businesses and nonprofit organizations.

In 1998, Laura joined the Gravure Association of America (GAA), serving as the Director of Communications for the association and Editor-in-Chief of GRAVURE Magazine. She managed all marketing, public relations, communications, design, and print production and purchasing, including: total production (editorial, design, and layout) of a bimonthly magazine; editing, design, and publication of technical materials; the development of association marketing plans and materials; design of annual reports; content and design of the GAA and GEF Web sites; photographic services for major conferences and events; representation of the association at various national and international events.

In February 2004, Laura was named the Executive Director of the Gravure Education Foundation (GEF) where she managed a $1 million endowment fund, planned and conducted fundraising programs, developed strategic plans for growth, monitored student scholarship programs and competitions, and oversaw educational program development and university/industry relations.

Significant accomplishments over her tenure with the GEF and GAA include:

  • Design and implementation of an annual sponsorship program, producing approximately $1.4 million in revenue over five years.
  • Implementation of Gravure Tech, the first GAA/GEF educational program.
  • Reducing production costs of GRAVURE Magazine 20 percent through implementation of PDF and computer-to-plate workflows.
  • Winning eleven APEX Awards (2001-2006) for Publication Excellence.

In 2006 and 2007, Laura worked for the FTA, serving as their Technical Communications Manager and is presently working as a branding consultant on their new TEST initiative.
