Laura Wayland-Smith Hatch attended
SUNY Binghamton/Harpur College studying anthropology. She
has lived in Spain, Japan, and Mexico and served on the board of
directors of the American School in Japan and Colegio Maria
Montessori. During her three-year residency in Japan, she
worked as a freelance photographer and served as the
Children's Theatre of Tokyo's Publicity Coordinator for all
their English-language publications
For five years, she was a partner in Horizons International,
an international relocation consulting firm, assisting expatriate
families with their moves overseas. Clients included Xerox
Corporation, Eastman Kodak, Bausch & Lomb, Schlegel Corporation,
and Oneida Limited.
Since 1989, she has owned Salmon Creek Publishing, a small
firm that provides customized design and marketing services
for small businesses and nonprofit organizations.
In 1998, Laura joined the Gravure Association of America
(GAA), serving as the Director of Communications for the
association and Editor-in-Chief of GRAVURE Magazine. She
managed all marketing, public relations, communications,
design, and print production and purchasing, including: total
production (editorial, design, and layout) of a bimonthly
magazine; editing, design, and publication of technical materials;
the development of association marketing plans and materials;
design of annual reports; content and design of the GAA and
GEF Web sites; photographic services for major conferences
and events; representation of the association at various
national and international events.
In February 2004, Laura was named the Executive Director
of the Gravure Education Foundation (GEF) where she managed
a $1 million endowment fund, planned and conducted fundraising
programs, developed strategic plans for growth, monitored
student scholarship programs and competitions, and oversaw
educational program development and university/industry relations.
Significant accomplishments over her tenure with the GEF
and GAA include:
- Design and implementation of an annual sponsorship program,
producing approximately $1.4 million in revenue over five
years.
- Implementation of Gravure Tech, the first GAA/GEF educational
program.
- Reducing production costs of GRAVURE Magazine 20 percent
through implementation of PDF and computer-to-plate workflows.
- Winning eleven APEX Awards (2001-2006) for Publication
Excellence.
In 2006 and 2007, Laura worked for the FTA, serving as their Technical Communications Manager and is presently working as a branding consultant on their new TEST initiative. |
