Laura Wayland-Smith Hatch

Laura Wayland-Smith Hatch attended SUNY Binghamton/Harpur College studying anthropology. She has lived in Spain, Japan, and Mexico and served on the board of directors of the American School in Japan and Colegio Maria Montessori. During her three-year residency in Japan, she worked as a freelance photographer and served as the Children's Theatre of Tokyo's Publicity Coordinator for all their English-language publications

For five years, she was a partner in Horizons International, an international relocation consulting firm, assisting expatriate families with their moves overseas. Clients included Xerox Corporation, Eastman Kodak, Bausch & Lomb, Schlegel Corporation, and Oneida Limited.

Since 1989, she has owned Salmon Creek Publishing, a small firm that provides customized design and marketing services for small businesses and nonprofit organizations.

In 1998, Laura joined the Gravure Association of America (GAA), serving as the Director of Communications for the association and Editor-in-Chief of GRAVURE Magazine. She managed all marketing, public relations, communications, design, and print production and purchasing, including: total production (editorial, design, and layout) of a bimonthly magazine; editing, design, and publication of technical materials; the development of association marketing plans and materials; design of annual reports; content and design of the GAA and GEF Web sites; photographic services for major conferences and events; representation of the association at various national and international events.

In February 2004, Laura was named the Executive Director of the Gravure Education Foundation (GEF) where she managed a $1 million endowment fund, planned and conducted fundraising programs, developed strategic plans for growth, monitored student scholarship programs and competitions, and oversaw educational program development and university/industry relations.

Significant accomplishments over her tenure with the GEF and GAA include:

  • Design and implementation of an annual sponsorship program, producing approximately $1.4 million in revenue over five years.
  • Implementation of Gravure Tech, the first GAA/GEF educational program.
  • Reducing production costs of GRAVURE Magazine 20 percent through implementation of PDF and computer-to-plate workflows.
  • Winning eleven APEX Awards (2001-2006) for Publication Excellence.

In 2006 and 2007, Laura worked for the FTA, serving as their Technical Communications Manager and is presently working as a branding consultant on their new TEST initiative.

Returning to the realm of management and technical printing consulting in July 2005, Rudy's previous position was as Technical Specialist for the Gravure Association of America. Rudy joined the GAA staff in Rochester, New York, in March of 2001. Prior to that, he had a similar title for then Lawson Mardon Packaging (now Alcan Packaging) and worked mainly with ink and overall cost reduction and color measurement at press. He has been a consultant in the printing industry since 1994 and has in depth experience with flexographic, lithographic, and gravure processes, as well as more than twenty years experience with ink and color science.

He graduated cum laude in Chemistry with a B.A. from Bellarmine College (now University) in 1977. He began his career as an analytical environmental scientist. He joined Harshaw Chemical (now Engelhard) as a pigment chemist in 1981. He has also done product development as a chemist for American Air Filter, and a quality control chemist for American Synthetic Rubber. He considers some of his prior major career achievements to be:

  • Successful in-process cost reductions for pigment manufacturing totaling $1 MM for a $23 MM annual sales.
  • Successful development in four weeks time of an inexpensive, in-process treatment for Cadmium pigments to pass stringent waste water and TCLP tests for soluble Cadmium, rescuing a $35 MM annual business from immediate shut down. Adjunct Chemistry Professor Bellarmine College 1994-1995
  • An architect and champion for a global cost reduction-in-use ink contract totaling 10% annual sales for a global packaging company.
  • Writing of GAA courses for Basic Gravure, Gravure Fingerprinting, and Gravure Operator Certification, and PackSim train-the trainer.
  • Exclusive instructor for all GAA courses and On Site training, including RIT and WMU courses, in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004.

His GAA accomplishments include:

  • Development of and implementation of GAA's on-site consulting program.
  • Trainer and support for the PackSim Gravure Press Simulator.
  • Regular contributor to and Technical Editor for Gravure Magazine.
  • Exclusive Instructor and author for all GAA Courses and Seminars, Gravure Operator Certification
  • Organizer for GAA Technical Conferences.
